Dane County Bar Association

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Some of the legal services are offered in a pro bono capacity, meaning you will not have to pay, while others provide payment plans or sliding-scale fees based on your income, making them much more affordable than market-rate legal services. Please be sure to read over the specific costs of each referral in their description area, or inquire when you call. You will be charged for your initial contact with any of the referrals.

This website can connect you to legal services in a variety of areas, both civil and criminal. Some of the referrals are attorneys who provide direct representation at low or no cost, while others are legal clinics that provide legal advice, assistance filling out paperwork, and limited-scope legal support. Please refer to the “practice areas” tab to select the legal service type that best relates to your need. From there, you will be directed to applicable attorneys and clinics and you will be provided information about the type of service provided.

The Community Lawyer website is a branch of the Dane County Bar Association, meaning the majority of the clinics and attorneys are specifically aimed to assist Dane County residents. However, some of the referrals that listed here provide services beyond the Dane County line.

Particularly unique legal situations will be referred to a general referral hotline and online legal help hotline maintained by the State Bar of Wisconsin. (should we include the links here to these resources?)

Yes. All of the information you provide to us will only be used to match you with legal services. We do not provide information to any third-parties. Each attorney and clinic will provide their own confidentiality and retainer agreements at the time of service. However, use of this program does not create an attorney client relationship.
